Common Kegel mistakes and how to correct them
Most Kegel mistakes are not about motivation. They happen when effort replaces awareness. Correcting the movement is more useful than completing a number on the screen.

- Do not train regularly while urinating.
- Do not clench the buttocks, thighs or abdomen.
- Do not push through pain or incomplete relaxation.
Holding your breath
If the jaw, shoulders or breath stiffen, reduce the effort. A soft exhale can help coordinate the lift without bracing the whole body.
Pushing down instead of lifting
Bearing down increases pressure rather than creating an inward lift. Stop, return to easy breathing and use a smaller contraction. Seek help if the direction remains unclear.
Doing more when quality falls
NIDDK warns against overdoing pelvic floor exercises. End the set when the squeeze fades, other muscles take over or the release disappears.
