Kegel exercises for men: technique and limits

For men, the useful action is a gentle inward lift around the back passage and urethra. The penis base may draw slightly inward and the scrotum may lift, but visible movement is only a check—not a target to force.

Finding the male pelvic floor

Begin sitting or lying. Close around the anus and urethra and feel a small lift inside the pelvis. Do not hold your breath or bear down.

Strength is not the only goal

Control includes a clear release. Persistent tension can be associated with pain and urinary or bowel difficulty, so more repetitions are not always the answer.

After prostate surgery

NICE recommends supervised pelvic floor muscle training for stress urinary incontinence caused by prostatectomy. A general web timer should support—not replace—the programme supplied by the clinical team.
